Brief description
Dr. Schnappauf advises clients on all aspects of intellectual property law, including strategic management of patent portfolios, due diligence analyses and freedom-to-operate analyses. His extensive experience extends to, among other things, application proceedings, opposition proceedings, appeal proceedings, and litigation concerning patents and across the entire field of pharmaceutical and chemical technologies, including the field of medical devices. Cases represented by Dr. Schnappauf have resulted in landmark decisions that have also been published in the Official Journal of the European Patent Office and cited in numerous other decisions.
Prior to his admission as a patent attorney, Dr. Schnappauf successfully completed his studies in law for patent attorneys at the Distance-Learning University of Hagen and underwent training periods at the German Patent and Trademark Office, Munich (Patent Division and Trademark Division), at the Federal Patent Court, Munich (Technical Appeals Board and Trademark Appeals Board) and at the District Court, Munich (Patent Division).
Dr. Schnappauf studied biology with a focus on biochemistry, molecular biology and organic chemistry at the Friedrich Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany and at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland. His doctoral thesis was prepared in cooperation with the 1976 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, William N. Lipscomb, of Harvard University, USA. During his doctoral studies, Dr. Schnappauf worked at Georg-August University, Göttingen, Germany; Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany; Harvard University, USA; and the University of California, Berkeley, USA. Dr. Schnappauf was a post-doctoral researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland.
Dr. Schnappauf is an active member of the working groups "Intellectual Property Rights and Technical Contracts" and "German-US-American Cooperation" of Bio Deutschland.
Dr. Schnappauf regularly gives lectures and seminars on European and German patent law in Europe, the USA and Asia and is the author of numerous scientific publications and papers in the field of intellectual property law.
