Dr. Karl Thieme has been training to become a German and European patent attorney at the law firm "Zwicker Schnappauf & Partner Patentanwälte PartG mbB" since 2018.

His practice focuses on the drafting of German, European and international patent applications and the prosecution of the corresponding grant proceedings. He is also involved in opposition, infringement and nullity proceedings for German and European patents.

Dr. Thieme studied biology (BSc) at the Georg-August-University Göttingen and at the Max-Planck-Institute for Biophysical Chemistry Göttingen as well as microbiology (MSc) at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg. Dr. Thieme completed his Master's thesis on transcription factors in the human pathogenic bacterium Yersinia pseudotuberculosis at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig. He then completed his doctorate under Prof. Dr. Gerhard H. Braus in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Genetics at the Georg-August University of Göttingen as part of the "Microbiology and Biochemistry" graduate program of the Göttingen Graduate Center for Neurosciences, Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences. In his doctoral thesis, he dealt with the transcriptional regulation of developmental programs and secondary metabolism in the genetic model organism Aspergillus nidulans and the human pathogenic fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. At the same time as his dissertation, Dr. Thieme completed the distance learning course "Patent Law for Engineers and Natural Scientists" at the Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin.
